Help! My leopard gecko won’t eat his worms, what should I do?
I received a message from a worried keeper who said, “I've got a nine month old juvenile leopard gecko named Huddy. He was first eating regularly when we first got him, but now we are having trouble feeding him. He never wants to eat and I have tried various methods like splitting the worm in half, but after picking it, he just leaves it there. ”
Remember, a varied diet is key when it comes to leopard geckos; they can easily get bored if offered the same feeder insect over and over again. Here are some things you should try:
Step one: Offer other feeders such as crickets, locusts, dubia roaches or calci worms.
Step two: Make sure the food is gutloaded (fed), if you are already feeding you feeder insects, consider changing what you feed them, this may impact their smell/taste and may entice your gecko more.
Step three: Look at different ways of offering the food. My leopard geckos, for example, will ignore a bowl of mealworms, and will only react to a worm if I place on down at a time, in clear view of the gecko.
If you gecko continues to refuse food and lose weight, please seek veterinary advice.
